The rules just changed under your feet
You spent years and money getting your business to rank on Google. That work still matters. But a growing share of your future guests are not opening Google at all. They open ChatGPT or Claude and ask a plain question. "Where should I stay in Lamai." "Best dive school on Koh Samui for beginners." The assistant gives them a short answer with a few names. Your page one ranking on Google does nothing in that conversation.
Why your SEO does not carry over
Search engine optimisation is about climbing a list of links. An AI answer is not a list. The assistant has either learned who you are or it has not. If it has not, you are simply absent from the recommendation, no matter how well you rank. The two systems pull from different places. Google rewards pages and links. AI rewards being understood and being talked about across the web.
What gets you into the answer
Two layers. First, your site has to be readable by machines. Clear structured data that says exactly what you are, where you are, and what you offer. A file called llms.txt that hands the assistants a clean summary. Permission for AI crawlers to read you at all, which many sites quietly block. Second, the web needs material to learn you from. Content that answers the real questions guests ask, plus reviews and mentions that build a picture over time.
The first layer you can fix in days. The second builds from there. Most operators have done neither, which is exactly why the category is wide open right now.

Whoever sets this up first becomes the name the assistant repeats. On a small island with a defined set of operators, that position is winnable today and very hard to take back later.
